Classroom Assessment Enhanced by Technology (all)

Overview

Effective assessment is a key element for student achievement in K-12 classrooms. Assessment is also an ongoing process, requiring multiple methods to ensure that teachers gather accurate information that meets the needs of all students. In this course, participants will explore principles of classroom assessment and a range of assessment methods supported by technology. Participants will review formative and performance assessment, backwards design, and various methods including quizzes, rubrics, and electronic portfolios. By the end of the course, participants will design new assessments to use with their curriculum.

Goals and Products

This course will enable participants to

- Understand the relationship between effective classroom assessment and increased student achievement
- Identify principles for effective assessment
- Learn how technology can support assessment
- Incorporate formative evaluation and performance assessment into their curriculum
- Use online tools to locate and develop quizzes and rubrics
- Explore how electronic portfolios can support classroom assessment

Format and Requirements

As a final product, participants will develop three forms of assessment to use in a curriculum unit: an online quiz, a performance assessment, and a rubric. Participants are also expected to complete a self-refl ection on how these assessments will be incorporated into the curriculum. These products will be recorded on the Final Product Checklist submitted to the instructor for evaluation.
